Work Placement Day 8

Soo, today on the work placement, I continued to fill out the website, creating the contact page forms and login fields, had a slight learning curve here as I had not use java script within input fields and submit buttons to change the appearance via css, but I got there in the end with the help of the mighty Steve, I am really pleased with the look of the site, all it needs now if filling out with content.

seen as I have no control over the content I stop working on the site towards the end of the day and started making a few template ideas for people that maybe interested in getting an estore, basically a few other designs that can be put on the site for customers to look at possibly and enticement?..

anyway, thought I would post these design up as well, I only had time to make 2 but was told to try just to be interesting, to make them as different from the simplyestores design layout as possible. I’m not sure this is a good way to market, but it has produced some interesting designs.

Work Placement Days 3-5

Day 3 – Today Alex and I were set the task of researching and designing some ideas for the siso estores website called ’siplyestores’ we were given a brief and asked to research other designs and competitor sites to get a good idea of what our designs needed to included. So we set to work researching competitor sites and stores, you can find me research documented here > www.wezdezign.com/research

Day 4 – We continued with research and annotation of that research and then begun producing some design ideas. I worked on photoshop pushing around layout ideas keeping a very simplistic and minimalist theme. filling out the pages with Lorem Ipsum and producing interesting menu positioning.

Day 5 – We were asked to have at least 3 design ideas complete by the afternoon which I already had so I worked through the morning making a second page for each of my ideas to give an idea of what the sites may look like when in use. we then had a little critique of the designs in the afternoon, the company seem to like my simplistic style of working, and my layouts were interesting although not distracting.

you can see all my design ideas for this project here, below is the one they choose to develop further.

Work Placement Days 1-2

Day 1 – Today I started work at 12oclock, and was almost instantly learning php and PostgreSQL, PostgreSQL is a slightly more advanced and open source version of MySQL which is a database management system.
The PHP code basically bridges the gap between the HTML in you website and the database that holds all your information.
I firstly made a new database and made a table with a few columns for data entry.
I was then learning how to store information in to the database based on entrys in a HTML form using POST and also how to call this information back to the page using and echo() funtion.
I made a ‘add’ ‘delete’ and ‘update’ function for the page so that you could add users to a databse and then delete and update if necassary.

Day 2 – I then went on to produce another page which was to use another table of the database which i called profiles, I learnt how to utilize the information in one table and store it in the next one using a drop down list to select a user and then store the profile based on that unique user_id.
I was then taught how to use sajax, a Java script based script to carry out my php? function for me looking up all users along side thier profiles and then spitting them back out on to the page with a little bit of formatting. I then took a break from java, php and PostgreSQL and did some CSS to make the page look pretty.

SH Screen Play Back in April

So back in April, I went and helped out at Spring Harvest, just thought I would shove some of the work we did up on the blog, I was working with a great team but mainly with Mr Benjamin Hall.. Anyway part of what I did that week was to produce some animation screen play for the main sessions in the Youth Venues. The theme for the week was “through different eyes” and the Arts Crew in our venue had produced these awesome 10x life size 3D glasses that hung above the stage.. So I set about producing some in after effects, simply building a frame and a few lenses in Photoshop I used the 3D settings in after effects to key frame a spin, and make it end exactly where it started so that our Projection Man could simply loop the playback through media shout. here is what it looked like :) ..

Short Form Video

Short form video is our group project that has been carried over the same time period as post production, We have been working in our groups to produce on film “hostage” but from different views and directions. my group is documentary and we have been working recently on the interviews involved in our documentary production. We have been making sure that where and how we shot the films have been in the particular style that we want to create that bring a very off the cuff Documented feel without it appearing scripted (which it obviously is)

The Project has been tough.. being a group project you very much rely on your team to meet deadlines and work as they say they will, We have been working pretty much flat out recently as some of the group have realized that they have slacked in some areas..

Another half of this project has been the website that will be the base of where the film is viewed, the aim is to produce a working website that users can browse and view the different groups sides/angles of the whole story although we will very much be pushing the user to watch in order like any other series/film we want to alow freedom for them to do as they please in that respect.

I have been working on the website which we are building in flash along with Lynne and Dan, Lynne as worked purely on the design and I have been doing the animation along with support from Dan on some of the javascript. I have found this to be a really smooth way of working, and this small team has worked well to produce the website as well as video work for the whole group.

here are some screen shots and images of the website design and flash building process. I have purchased a domain for the site at www.hostagefilm.eu so once the site is up and running it will appear here.

We have been working on the flash file quite rigorously and we have been looking in to video and media streaming whereby the video files can be hosted on a media server at the AUCB and we can have the front page at a more accessible position on my hosting, We are also working with .txt files for the bio page you will see in the javascript each bio page links to a .txt file, this is much easier if we ever needed to adjust the text for a Bio.
